About the Journal
Applied GIS is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal that publishes original research articles, reviews, case studies, case reports, and methodological papers in all areas of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, including their interdisciplinary applications. History and Development
The journal was established in 2005 by Jim Peterson to serve researchers whose work relies on detailed colored maps and visual data—formats that traditional publishers were often reluctant to accommodate.
Initially published by Monash University ePress in Melbourne, Australia, Applied GIS transitioned to a free and open-access model in 2007. This transition was made possible through the support of the Monash University Library, which agreed to store all published papers in their Arrow Repository, ensuring long-term accessibility and preservation.
Scope and Aims
Applied GIS welcomes contributions from both technical and social science domains within the GIS community. The journal aims to:
- Provide a platform for research in Remote Sensing and GIS applications.
